I have chosen two portrait photographs of my Nan from my dad’s side of the family for this blog post. Sadly she passed away in 2005 so I am not able to interview her for this blog post. I am going to focus on the clothing, fabrics and hair style. These photographs were taken in the 1930’s which would be pre-WWII.
My Nan is quite young in these photographs, perhaps only in her teens. As you can see the photographs are in black and white so there is no possible way to be able to tell what colours my Nan used to wear however, I believe she mostly wore light, pastel colours.
In the first photograph, she seems to be wearing a long sleeved shirt with a thick vest top over it. There is a strong possibility that the shirt was made out of cotton which would make it lightweight and airy. On the other hand, the vest top looks quite heavyweight and warm. It may be made out of faux fur which is a type of fake fur made out of synthetic fibres. The second photograph shows my Nan wearing what looks like a long sleeved cardigan. This would have been made out of wool.
She wasn’t into following fashion, this is quite evident by the simplicity of the clothes she wore. My Nan always kept her hair short and it was naturally curly, something that runs on my dad’s side of the family.
